The Triple Helix concept was introduced in the 1990s by Henry Etzkowitz and Loet Leydesdorff, who studied the shift from a predominantly industry-government pairing typical of an Industrial Society to a university-industry-government tripod (the Triple Helix) more appropriate to a Knowledge-Based Society. This model offers the opportunity of attaining innovative results aimed at social and economic development through collaboration among stakeholders in the university, industry and government spheres.
The Triple Helix movement began in 1996, with the first International Conference in Amsterdam. Half-yearly conferences have since taken place, exploring scientific research in the realms of: relations between science, business and government and their role in creating conditions for future innovation; cognitive, economic, social and cultural aspects of innovation; emerging models for the entrepreneurial university; and a lot more besides.
That led to the founding of the Triple Helix Association, which facilitated the organizing of annual international conferences and summits, involving academics from around the world, public policy makers and professionals interested in the theories and practical accomplishments of the Triple Helix model.
The Triple Helix Association is a non-governmental, non-profit organization, founded by researchers and interested in promoting and disseminating scientific knowledge. Support for institutions that promote scientific knowledge is important.
The Triple Helix Chapter in Brazil was established on 2017. The general objective works towards the promotion of Triple Helix concept in Brazil for strengthening the interaction among universities, government and industries and thus, contributing to the social and economic development of the country. The Chapter Brazil 2018-2020 of the THA has the following operational objectives:
1. to promote the Triple Helix – TH concepts, organizing a common framework of discussion for different actors;
2. to conduct multi-level and interdisciplinary research projects on TH themes and to disseminate their results in national and international media;
3. to develop a network among innovation actors, as technological parks, incubators, government, industries and civil society to develop innovation and entrepreneurship in order to promote knowledge exchange for innovation at local, national and international levels;
4. to widen THA participation and membership base.
